Merchandising Morons

life-game

Ok, I am not one of those guys who is against cartoon characters, or who feels that corporations are destroying our children by targeting toys and commercials at them, and I’m not someone who rails against “consumerism,” but, stupid is stupid.

I’m looking (online) through the clearance section of toys at a major big box retailer, and I see The Game of Life – Pirates of the Caribbean 2

What the—?

I mean seriously, is there a giant pent up demand for Pirates of the Caribbean board games?  Are you freaking kidding me?  I can’t think of who the loser is who wants a basic action figure (not counting the fans of specific actors who like those because of the actor, not because of the movie or character), let alone who in the world would want a Pirates of the Caribbean version of Life.

Look studio executives and assorted marketing chimps who are running some obviously ridiculous playbook: Match your merchandising to the film, the audience, and the products.  Just because Star Wars or Harry Potter can be put on anything doesn’t mean every movie released in the summer has the same ability.
